Tosamaidan: Kashmir's Hidden Alpine Gem

Nestled in the Pir Panjal range of Central Kashmir's Budgam district, Tosamaidan—meaning "King of Meadows"—is a sprawling 60-square-kilometer alpine meadow renowned for its lush greenery, pristine lakes, and panoramic mountain vistas.

At an elevation of approximately 10,000 feet, Tosamaidan offers a serene escape with its expansive meadows, dense deodar forests, and vibrant wildflowers. The area is a haven for trekkers, with popular trails leading to nearby meadows like Gadasar, Chanz, and Damansar, as well as alpine lakes such as Sundooqsar and Chanaaz. In winter, the snow-covered landscape transforms into a playground for skiing and snowboarding enthusiasts .

For decades, Tosamaidan served as a military artillery firing range, earning it the somber nickname "Meadow of Death." Between 1964 and 2014, unexploded ordnance led to numerous casualties. However, following public outcry and a demining operation in 2014, the area was cleared and opened to eco-tourism.
